With so many over-the-counter teeth whitening products, it's easy to see why some would question whether professional teeth whitening is worth it or not. Over-the-counter products are cheaper than professional teeth whitening, and you can do it at home.

Some of these whitening products are said to be almost as good as professional products, which is why some opt for the quicker and cheaper option. However, as you'll learn in this article, professional teeth whitening is better.

Professional Whitening Uses Bleaching Agents With Higher Concentrations

Typically, the products you would use at home have up to 10% concentration of hydrogen peroxide. It may whiten your teeth, but it doesn't have the same efficacy as in-office whitening because dentists use up to 40% hydrogen peroxide.

The higher concentration will ensure that the whitening agent bleaches your teeth instead of removing stains. If you remove surface stains such as coffee, your teeth will appear whiter for a little while, but your teeth will remain whiter for longer if you use professional teeth whitening.

Keep in mind that it's not guaranteed that professional teeth whitening will work for you. Some people have darker teeth due to their genetics, while others have amassed the color after decades of neglect. You won't know if teeth whitening is right for you unless you consult a dentist

Professional Teeth Whitening Last Longer

Over-the-counter products will typically work on surface-level stains and other minor stains. If you're looking for a long-term option, professional teeth whitening is ideal. However, this doesn't mean it will last forever.

Once you have received teeth whitening treatment, the dentist will often recommend the use of customized trays and hydrogen peroxide regularly. This will help you retain your whiter smile for longer.

Is It Worth It?

Over-the-counter products have come a long way, but they're not similar to professional products. Remember, the latter means you're working with a professional who will ensure that the products in use have the right concentration of whitening solutions.

The dentist will also ensure the teeth whitening treatment is safe. You can't guarantee the same when working with over-the-counter products. Yes, these products are cheaper, but you'll get better results and care when dealing with a professional.

If you're worried about cost, ask if your doctor offers discounts or can recommend an ideal over-the-counter tooth whitening product that will work for you. Ideally, teeth whitening should be supervised, which is why working with a dentist is important.
